Rahul Dravid who was fondly called as Jammy, GREAT WALL OF INDIA announced his retirement from Cricket and everyone was expected that he would be relaxing for a few weeks at home. Surprisingly the news flashed that GREAT WALL OF INDIA is playing a local match at HAL for a small team in KSCA division league. It was unbelievable and surprising for many as how come such a great player playing for a lower division team, that too in matting wicket at HAL, which was mostly made up of rough mud and stones. The story goes as below.
Rahul Dravid used to play for Bangalore United Cricket Club (BUCC) during his childhood days and the same team was in deep trouble and they were facing relegation threat as they were second last from the bottom and bottom two teams will be relegated. BUCC were playing against Friends Union Cricket Club (FUCC) and it was a must win match for BUCC as they need to collect three important points from the match to avoid relegation.
It was a two-day game and FUCC batted first and they were all out for 298 in 81 overs. Rahul Dravid fielded entire day for 81 overs and he was very much involved in fielding and he encouraged his bowlers, kept giving them tips. He asked his bowlers if they wanted water and he spoke to them in English, in Kannada and in Hindi. Next day BUCC started their innings and Rahul Dravid came in middle to bat and scored 113 runs before got out caught behind. The score was 10 runs short for the lead, when Rahul Dravid got out and he was totally unhappy when he walked out under standing ovation. What an incredible gesture and humbleness exhibited by GREAT WALL OF INDIA and as expected BUCC tailenders completed the formalities in taking much needed lead to grab three points to stay in the same division. Finally, BUCC avoided relegation.
For those two days, Rahul Dravid was busy in signing unlimited autograph and took pictures with fans without any break. He never complained on anything such as mud ground, no security from fans, no proper toilet facility, etc., Rahul Dravid, a great person after achieving so much in Cricket and still behaves to be student of the game which any youngster should learn.
