It all happened during the 1983 India’s bilateral tour with West Indies at Guyana on 29th March 1983 in second ODI at Albion Sports Complex, Albion, Berbice after India lost first ODI to mighty West Indies. There was not much expectation on India and entire thought was to play safely without any injuries. Clive Lloyd won the toss and sent India to bat. Ravi Shastri opened for first time in an ODI for India and paired with Sunil Gavaskar. India put on 93 runs as first wicket partnership before Shastri departs and then Mohinder Amarnath joined Gavaskar and both added 50 runs together before Sunny got out for brisk 90 runs. Till the time, it was a normal ODI and West Indies were favorite to win this ODI. To the surprise, crowd witnessed the entry of Kapil Dev, who promoted himself ahead of Dilip Vengsarkar, Yashpal Sharma and Ashok Malhotra.
From the word go, Haryana Hurricane started his attacking batting and he thrashed the West Indies pace attack comprising of Holding, Roberts, Marshall and ODI debutant Winston Davis all over the park and their pacers were clueless. It was a breezy knock and he scored 72 runs of just 38 deliveries with 7 fours and 3 sixers before he finally got dismissed when team score was 246 runs. Now both Yashpal and Vengsarkar continued their belligerence and finally India scored a mammoth score of 282 for 5 in 47 overs and of course it was a huge total during those days.
In reply, West Indies had a disastrous start were both their openers Greenidge and Haynes fell cheaply and West Indies were reduced to 22 to 2 due to tremendous bowling by both Kapil Dev and Balwinder Singh Sandhu. Vivian Richards steadied West Indies batting with a quick knock of 64 runs of 51 balls before he fell to Madan Lal. Clive Lloyd also dismissed cheaply and it was Faoud Bacchus and Jeff Dujon carried the chase with both scoring 50 runs each and still it was not enough to win the match. Finally, West Indies ended their innings with 255 for 9 in 47 overs, thereby India registered its first ever ODI victory over West Indies at Berbice with Kapil Dev won the man of the match award with an impressive bowling figures of 2 for 33 in 10 overs.
